Breasts changes during pregnancy: What to expects

Pregnancy 20th August 2018

From the commencement of your pregnancy, you should start to expect some breast changes. However, these changes are common because your breasts begin to get evolved and prepared for the arrival of your baby.

Hormonal changes are responsible for the breasts symptoms which may vary from person to person.

The various breasts changes during pregnancy include-

  • Enlargement and Growth.
  • Dark veins along the breasts due to the increased blood supply to the breasts.
  • The breasts may begin to secrete a thick yellowish substance called as colostrum.
  • Soreness and sensitivity.
  • Blackening of nipples as well as areolas (the skin around the nipples) due to hormonal changes which affect the coloring of the skin.
  • Nipples begin to get sticky.
  • The nipples and areolas grow bigger.
  • Montgomery's tubercles (small glands on the areolas) get raised bumps.

Colostrum: pre-milk or Colostrum is a watery fluid (sweet) that is easily digestible. By the 2nd trimester, the breasts start to produce colostrum. At first, colostrum is thick yellow and as the birth advances, it tends to become pale (almost colorless).

Colostrum comes as the first meal to your baby before the proper mature milk comes in.

Tenderness and Sensitivity: Hormones in the body tend to prepare your breasts for lactation. Since the breasts gets filled with milk in the early pregnancy, the milk tubes tend to grow and get stretched. These changes results in making your breasts more sensitive, mainly the nipples. You may experience discomfort due to this which is normal. Discharge occurs at any moment if stimulated. There is no need to get alarmed or get worried when it happens.
